How to choose a robot vacuum

Robot vacuums range from simple bump-and-turn models to machines that map your home and empty themselves. The right one depends on your floors, your pets and how much you want to think about it.

Navigation: the biggest difference

Random or gyroscope navigation is what you find on the cheapest models. They bounce around and cover the floor eventually, but they miss spots and take longer.

Mapping models use a laser sensor (often called lidar) or a camera to build a map of your home. They clean in neat rows, return to the dock to recharge and pick up where they left off, and let you block off rooms in the app. If your home has more than a couple of rooms, mapping is worth paying for.

Self-emptying bases

A self-emptying base sucks the dirt out of the robot into a bag or bin in the dock. Instead of emptying a tiny bin after every run, you empty the base every few weeks. It is a real convenience, especially with pets, but the bags are an ongoing cost.

Mopping

Many robots now vacuum and mop. Basic models drag a damp pad, which freshens hard floors but will not scrub. Better models lift the mop on carpet and press or spin it on hard floors. If you have mostly carpet, skip mopping and put the money toward suction and mapping.

Pets and hair

Look for rubber brush rolls instead of bristles. They tangle less with long hair and pet fur. A larger bin or a self-emptying base also helps.

Running costs to check before you buy

Every robot vacuum needs replacement filters, side brushes and main brushes, and self-emptying models need bags. Before you buy, check that replacement parts are easy to find and reasonably priced. Some cheaper brands use parts that become hard to get later.

Is it a good deal?

Robot vacuums go on sale often, especially around major shopping events. Compare against the price history, and remember that last year's model with mapping is usually a better buy than this year's model without it.
