Amazon returns: the basics before you buy
A deal is only a deal if you can live with it or send it back. Here is what to know about returns before you hit buy.
The usual window
Most items shipped and sold by Amazon can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Some categories have shorter windows, and some items, like certain grocery, personal care and digital goods, cannot be returned at all. The product page and your order details show the exact return policy for that item. Trust those over any general rule.
Third-party sellers
When an item is sold by a third party, the seller sets the return policy, though most follow Amazon's standard terms. If it is sold by a third party but fulfilled by Amazon, returns usually go through Amazon's normal process. If the seller ships it themselves, returns can be slower. The A-to-z Guarantee covers you if a seller does not deliver or does not honor a return.
The holiday window
In recent years, Amazon has extended returns for most items bought from early November through December, allowing returns until the end of January. The exact dates are announced each season. Check the return date on your order.
Free returns
Many items show "FREE Returns" near the price, which means at least one free return method, often drop-off at a UPS store, Whole Foods, Kohl's or an Amazon locker. Items without that label may charge return shipping.
Before you buy
- Check "Returns" on the product page.
- Note whether it is sold by Amazon or a third party.
- For clothing and shoes, check the size chart. Fit is the top reason for returns.
